Who elects U.S. senators?

Why this is the correct answer

Citizens of each state choose their U.S. senators through direct popular elections. This has been the case since the 17th Amendment was ratified in 1913, before which senators were chosen by state legislatures. Direct election makes senators more directly accountable to the people they represent.
