What to expect
The civics test is an oral interview. If you file Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025, you take the 2025 civics test: a USCIS officer will ask you up to 20 questions from the official list of 128 civics questions. You need 12 correct answers to pass, and the officer stops asking as soon as you reach 12 right or 9 wrong. If you are 65 or older and have been a permanent resident for at least 20 years when you file, you only need to study 20 questions. The officer asks 10 of them, you need 6 correct, and you may take the civics test in the language of your choice.
