How to Take the Life in the UK Test

What is the Life in the UK Test?

The Life in the UK Test is the official citizenship test required for British citizenship and permanent settlement. You take it at an approved test centre, and it consists of 24 multiple-choice questions. You have 45 minutes to complete it.

To pass, you need at least 18 correct answers (75%). The questions are based on the official handbook “Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents” and cover British history, traditions, culture, and values.

How to register

  1. Go to officiallifeintheuk.co.uk and create an account.
  2. Search for a test centre near you and select an available date and time.
  3. Pay the £50 fee and complete your booking. You will receive a confirmation email with your test details.

The fee is £50 per attempt. If you do not pass, you can register and pay again. There is no limit on how many times you can take the test, but you must wait 7 days before retaking.

What to bring on the day

Bring valid photographic ID (passport, biometric residence permit, or UK driving licence) and your booking confirmation email or reference number.

Phones, smartwatches, notes, bags, and any other personal items are not allowed in the test room. Secure storage will be provided.

What happens during the test

You take the test on a computer at the test centre. You will see 24 multiple-choice questions, each with three or four possible answers. The questions are randomly selected from the official question bank.

The test is in English only and there is no option for translation. You can change your answers before submitting. The timer shows your remaining time throughout the test.

What happens after the test

Results are immediate. Once you submit your answers, the screen will show whether you have passed or failed. You will receive a unique reference number on screen.

If you pass, you will receive your pass notification letter within 10 working days by post. Keep this letter safe as you will need it for your citizenship or settlement application. If you do not pass, you can book a new test immediately (after the 7-day waiting period).
