CCSE Exam Guide

What is the CCSE?

The CCSE (Conocimientos Constitucionales y Socioculturales de España) is a standardised test of constitutional and sociocultural knowledge required for Spanish citizenship by residence (naturalisation). It is administered by the Instituto Cervantes and taken at authorised exam centres.

The exam consists of 25 multiple-choice questions drawn from a published bank of 300 official questions. You have 45 minutes to complete the test. A minimum score of 15 out of 25 (60%) is required to pass.

Who needs to take it?

The CCSE is required for most naturalisation applicants seeking Spanish citizenship by residence. To apply, you must generally meet the following conditions:

  • Have legally resided in Spain for at least 10 years (reduced to 2 years for nationals of Latin American countries, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, Andorra, and Sephardic Jews).
  • Hold a valid residence permit at the time of application.
  • Be of good civic conduct and integrate into Spanish society.
  • Pass both the CCSE and the DELE Spanish language exam (level A2 minimum, or equivalent).

How the exam works

The CCSE is a computer-based, multiple-choice exam. Each question presents a statement or question followed by three or four answer options, of which only one is correct. The 25 questions are drawn at random from the official bank of 300, weighted across the five topic areas.

You have 45 minutes to complete the exam. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so it is worth answering every question. Results are communicated to the Civil Registry for your nationality application — you do not receive a paper certificate.

The exam fee is approximately €85. If you do not pass, you may retake the exam on subsequent dates.

What topics are covered?

The 300 official questions are organised into five topic areas (tareas):

  • Tarea 1 — Gobierno, legislación y participación ciudadana — the Constitution, branches of government, elections, and civic participation
  • Tarea 2 — Derechos y deberes fundamentales — fundamental rights, civil liberties, obligations of citizens
  • Tarea 3 — Organización territorial de España. Geografía física y política — autonomous communities, provinces, physical and political geography
  • Tarea 4 — Cultura e historia de España — Spanish history, heritage, art, and culture
  • Tarea 5 — Sociedad española — education, healthcare, social protection, and daily life in Spain

How to prepare

The official question bank is fixed — you can study every possible question in advance. The most effective approach is to practise all 300 questions systematically, rather than trying to memorise individual answers.

  1. Start with Tarea 1 (government and legislation) — it forms the largest part of the exam and underpins many questions in other areas.
  2. Work through each chapter in order, using the study mode to read questions with answers revealed before testing yourself with the quiz mode.
  3. Take full 25-question mock exams regularly to build familiarity with the time pressure and question format.
  4. Focus your final revision on questions you consistently get wrong — the Not Started filter helps you track unseen questions.
  5. On exam day, read each question carefully — some options are designed to be very similar, and the correct answer depends on a specific detail.
