Why this is the correct answer
At the end of World War II, the Allied powers divided Germany geographically into occupation zones. Britain controlled the northwest (zone 1), the Soviet Union controlled the east (zone 2), the United States controlled the south (zone 3), and France controlled the southwest (zone 4). Berlin, entirely surrounded by the Soviet zone, was itself divided into four corresponding sectors.
