How to Take the German Citizenship Test (Einbürgerungstest)
What is the Einbürgerungstest?
The Einbürgerungstest is the official citizenship test run by the BAMF (Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge). You take it at an authorised test centre, and it consists of 33 multiple-choice questions. You have 60 minutes to complete it.
To pass for citizenship you need at least 17 correct answers. If you score 15 or more, that also counts as passing the Leben in Deutschland (LiD) test, which is what you need for permanent residency.
How to register
- Go to bamf.de and use the test centre search to find a location near you.
- Contact the centre directly to register, either online or by phone depending on what they offer.
- You will get a confirmation with your date, time, and location. Keep this safe.
The fee is 25 euros per attempt. If you do not pass, you can register and pay again. There is no limit on how many times you can take the test.
What to bring on the day
Bring a valid ID or passport and your registration confirmation. You will also need a blue or black ballpoint pen to mark your answer sheet on the day.
Phones, smartwatches, notes, and any other aids are not allowed. You will be asked to hand them in before the test starts.
What happens during the test
You receive a paper test booklet with 33 questions. 30 questions are drawn from the general question pool covering democracy, history, and society. The remaining 3 are specific to the Bundesland where you are registered.
Each question has four options and exactly one correct answer. You mark your answer on a separate answer sheet. The test is in German only.
What happens after the test
Results are not instant. Your answer sheet is sent to BAMF centrally and processing typically takes several weeks, sometimes longer. Once done, you receive a certificate by post confirming your score. You use this certificate as part of your citizenship or residency application.
If you do not pass, you can simply book again. There is no waiting period and no limit on attempts.
