The Passive: Past and with Modals
Learn to move the passive into the past with wurde and ist ... worden, and to combine it with modal verbs in patterns such as muss ... werden.
The past passive: wurde plus participle
The last lesson gave you the present passive: Die Heizung wird repariert. To report that the repair already happened, shift werden into its Präteritum: wurde. Die Heizung wurde gestern repariert — the heating was repaired yesterday. werden is a strong verb, and its past forms are ich wurde, du wurdest, er wurde, wir wurden, ihr wurdet, sie wurden.
Everything else stays exactly as in the present passive: the participle holds the end of the clause, the subject dictates singular or plural — das Haus wurde gebaut, die Häuser wurden gebaut — and the doer, if needed, joins with von.
The wurde-passive is the narrative past of official and written German, the passive twin of the Präteritum from lessons one and two. Announcements, reports and histories are full of it: Das Gebäude wurde vor hundert Jahren gebaut. Die Mieter wurden schriftlich informiert.
Die Heizung wurde gestern endlich repariert.
The heating was finally repaired yesterday.
Das Gebäude wurde vor hundert Jahren gebaut.
The building was built a hundred years ago.
Die Mieter wurden vom Vermieter schriftlich informiert.
The tenants were informed in writing by the landlord.
Plural subject, plural wurden — and the doer joins with von, as in the present passive.
The perfect passive: ist ... worden
Spoken German prefers the Perfekt for the past, and the passive follows suit. The perfect passive is formed with sein plus the participle plus worden: Die Heizung ist repariert worden — the heating has been repaired. Note the two oddities: the helper is sein, never haben, and the participle of werden appears in a special short form, worden, without ge-.
Why worden and not geworden? German reserves geworden for werden as a full verb — Er ist Lehrer geworden, he became a teacher. Inside the passive, the shortened worden signals that werden is only doing grammatical work. Reading tip: ist ... worden at the end of a sentence is an unmistakable passive fingerprint.
In practice the wurde-passive and the ist ... worden passive mean the same thing, and the register rule from lesson one applies once more: wurde in connected writing, ist ... worden in conversation. Mein Fahrrad ist gestohlen worden! is what you say at the police station; the report the officer types will say wurde gestohlen.
Die Heizung ist schon repariert worden.
The heating has already been repaired.
Mein Fahrrad ist letzte Woche gestohlen worden.
My bicycle was stolen last week.
Helper sein plus participle plus worden — the short form without ge-.
Er ist Lehrer geworden.
He became a teacher.
Full-verb werden keeps geworden. Only the passive uses the short form worden.

The passive with modals: muss ... werden
Rules and obligations love the passive, and for that German combines a modal verb with a passive infinitive: werden in the infinitive plus the participle. Die Miete muss bis zum dritten Werktag überwiesen werden — the rent must be transferred by the third working day. The modal sits in second position; the pair participle plus werden closes the clause.
All the modals you know join the pattern. kann ... werden says something is possible: Der Vertrag kann jederzeit gekündigt werden. darf nicht ... werden forbids: Im Treppenhaus dürfen keine Fahrräder abgestellt werden. soll ... werden reports what is supposed to happen: Das Dach soll nächsten Monat erneuert werden.
In a subordinate clause, the modal — as the conjugated verb — moves to the very end, after the passive infinitive: Der Vermieter schreibt, dass die Wohnungen renoviert werden müssen. Read that final chain calmly: renoviert werden müssen — participle, werden, modal.
Die Miete muss bis zum dritten Werktag überwiesen werden.
The rent must be transferred by the third working day.
Der Vertrag kann jederzeit schriftlich gekündigt werden.
The contract can be terminated in writing at any time.
Im Treppenhaus dürfen keine Fahrräder abgestellt werden.
No bicycles may be parked in the stairwell.
darf nicht or dürfen keine plus the passive infinitive expresses a prohibition.
Der Vermieter schreibt, dass die Wohnungen renoviert werden müssen.
The landlord writes that the flats have to be renovated.
In the dass-clause the chain at the end runs participle — werden — modal.
Reading announcements, writing complaints
Put the three patterns together and you can decode any notice on a German stairwell. A typical announcement runs: Am Montag werden die Wasserleitungen geprüft. Das Wasser wurde bereits am Freitag abgestellt. Die Arbeiten müssen bis Ende der Woche abgeschlossen werden. Present passive for the plan, wurde for what already happened, modal passive for the obligation.
The same grammar powers your own formal letters. A complaint to a landlord gains weight in the passive, because it states facts instead of accusations: Die Heizung wurde seit drei Wochen nicht repariert reads more neutrally than an attack on the landlord personally — and Ich bitte darum, dass der Schaden schnell behoben wird makes the demand politely.
As a final orientation, line up the forms of one verb: wird repariert — is being repaired; wurde repariert — was repaired; ist repariert worden — has been repaired; muss repariert werden — must be repaired. Master this one column and every other verb follows the same track.
Am Montag werden die Wasserleitungen im ganzen Haus geprüft.
On Monday the water pipes in the whole building will be checked.
Die Heizung wurde seit drei Wochen nicht repariert.
The heating has not been repaired for three weeks.
A passive statement of fact — a polite but firm line in a written complaint.
Ich bitte darum, dass der Schaden so schnell wie möglich behoben wird.
I request that the damage be fixed as quickly as possible.
