How to Book the Life in the UK Test
A step-by-step guide to booking the Life in the UK test online, what you need to book, the fee, how far in advance you must book, and the ID to bring on the day.
The Life in the UK test can only be booked online, and only through the official government booking service. There is no walk-in option and no booking by phone or in person. Here is how to do it correctly and avoid the simple mistakes that cause problems on test day.
Book through the official service only
The test is booked on gov.uk. Be careful with search results, because there are unofficial sites that look like booking pages and charge extra fees for nothing. The genuine service is on gov.uk and the test fee is £50, paid directly. If a site is asking for more than that or is not a gov.uk address, it is not the official booking service.
What you need before you start
To book, you need an email address, a debit or credit card to pay the £50 fee, and an accepted form of photo ID. The name on your booking has to match the name on the ID you will bring to the test centre exactly. This is the single most important detail to get right, because a mismatch can mean you are turned away and lose your fee.
How far in advance to book
You must book at least 3 days in advance. You cannot book a test for tomorrow or the same day. In practice you book a slot at one of the official test centres around the country, choosing a date, time, and location that suit you. Popular centres can fill up, so if you have a deadline, book early rather than leaving it to the last week.
Choosing where to take it
The test is the same everywhere. There are no regional variants, so whether you sit it in London, Cardiff, Glasgow, or Belfast, the questions are drawn from the same official handbook. Choose the centre that is most convenient to travel to, and give yourself enough time to arrive without rushing.
Changing or cancelling a booking
If your plans change, you can usually amend or cancel your booking without losing the fee as long as you give enough notice, generally more than 3 days before the test. Leave it later than that and you may forfeit the £50. Check the exact cancellation terms on gov.uk when you book, because they are set out clearly there.
What to bring on the day
Bring the photo ID that matches your booking. Accepted ID includes a valid passport, a biometric residence permit, or certain national identity cards and travel documents. If your ID does not match your booking name, or you forget it, you will not be able to take the test and you will not get a refund. Arrive in good time, because late arrival can also cost you the slot.
After you book
Use the time before your test to prepare properly. The test is 24 questions in 45 minutes, and you need 75% to pass. Everything comes from the official handbook, "Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents." Reading the book once is not enough for most people. Working through practice questions by topic is what turns recognition into the kind of recall the test demands.
PassCitizen has the full question bank sorted by topic, so you can drill history, government, and society separately, then put it together with free timed mock tests, no account needed.
