Austrian Citizenship Test 2026: How to Prepare and What to Expect

A complete guide to the Austrian citizenship test in 2026. How the test works, what topics are covered, how many questions you need to get right and how to study effectively.

The Austrian citizenship test is a required part of the naturalization process in Austria. It is manageable with the right preparation, but it does cover a specific range of topics that you need to actively learn rather than just skim through.

This guide explains how the test works, what it covers and how to prepare for it properly.

Who needs to take the test

The citizenship test is required for all applicants for Austrian citizenship as part of demonstrating knowledge of Austrian society, history and democratic values. The exact requirements and procedures can vary slightly depending on the Austrian state where you live.

What the test looks like

The test has 18 questions in total. Thirteen of them are federal questions that are the same for every applicant across Austria. The remaining five questions are specific to the Austrian state where you are registered.

You need to answer at least 12 of the 18 questions correctly to pass. That is a pass rate of approximately 67 percent. You can get up to 6 questions wrong and still pass.

All questions are multiple choice with four options. You do not have to write anything from memory. The test is taken at the relevant authority in your state.

What the test covers

The 13 federal questions cover four main topic areas.

The first is the democratic order of Austria. This includes the structure of the state, the Austrian constitution, the roles of the Nationalrat, the Bundesrat and the federal government, and the basic principles of Austrian democracy.

The second is Austrian history and culture. Questions here cover the founding of the First Republic, the period of Austrofascism and the Anschluss in 1938, the post-war reconstruction and the development of modern Austria. It also covers aspects of Austrian culture and society.

The third is the European Union. This covers EU institutions, Austria's role as an EU member state and the principles of European cooperation and governance.

The fourth is fundamental rights and human rights, including the rights guaranteed by the Austrian constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights.

The 5 state-specific questions vary by state and cover the history, political system and particular characteristics of the state where you live. Make sure you know which questions apply to your state.

How to study effectively

Working through the material one topic at a time and testing yourself after each section is the most reliable approach. Reading through all the content at once without checking what you have retained rarely works well for this kind of test.

The state-specific questions are worth more attention than many people give them. Five questions out of 18 is almost 28 percent of the test. Getting three or more of those wrong makes passing significantly harder even if you do well on the federal questions.

After covering all the topics, do a full practice run with all 18 questions before your test date. This tells you where you still have gaps and gets you comfortable with the pace and format.

How long does preparation take?

Two to three weeks of regular daily practice is enough for most people. Thirty to 45 minutes a day, working through one section at a time and testing yourself as you go, covers the material comfortably in that timeframe.

If you already have a solid background in Austrian history and politics, you may need less time. If the material is largely new to you, give yourself four weeks.

What happens if you do not pass?

You can retake the test. The rules around retakes, including any waiting periods between attempts, vary by state. Contact the relevant authority in your state for the specific conditions that apply to you.
