How to Take the Australian Citizenship Test
What is the Australian Citizenship Test?
The Australian Citizenship Test is required for most adults applying for Australian citizenship. It is administered by the Department of Home Affairs. The test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, and you have 45 minutes to complete it.
To pass, you need at least 15 correct answers (75%), including all 5 questions about Australian values. The questions are based on the official resource book “Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond” and cover Australian history, culture, values, government, and responsibilities.
How to register
You do not register for the test separately. After you submit your citizenship application and it is processed, the Department of Home Affairs will send you an appointment letter for your test. The letter will include:
- The date, time, and location of your test and interview
- What documents to bring
- Information about preparing for the test
There is no additional fee for the citizenship test—it is included in your citizenship application fee. If you do not pass, you will be given another chance to take the test.
What to bring on the day
Bring your appointment letter, passport, travel documents, and any other identity documents requested in your appointment letter. You should also bring your permanent residence or other visa evidence.
Mobile phones, electronic devices, dictionaries, notes, and personal items must be left in secure storage. You are not allowed to bring them into the test room.
What happens during the test
You take the test on a computer at a Department of Home Affairs office. The test has 20 questions—15 general questions and 5 Australian values questions. All questions are multiple-choice with four possible answers.
The test is in English only. You have 45 minutes to answer all questions. You must answer all 5 values questions correctly to pass, plus achieve an overall score of at least 75% (15 out of 20).
What happens after the test
You will receive your result immediately on the computer screen after submitting your answers. If you pass, you will proceed to a short interview with a department official, and your citizenship application will continue to be processed.
If you do not pass, you will be offered another test appointment at no additional cost. You can retake the test as many times as needed. After the test, you will also have an interview about your application.
