Feldkirch, situated at the meeting point of the Rhine valley and the Ill valley near the Swiss and Liechtenstein borders, preserves a largely intact medieval street plan with towers, gates, and arcaded lanes. Its fourteenth-century Schattenburg castle towers above the town and today houses a regional museum. Since 1968 Feldkirch has also been the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Feldkirch, giving it ecclesiastical as well as historical significance.
