The Brenner Pass, at 1,370 meters, is the lowest of the main Alpine crossing points and has been a major transit route since Roman times, when it carried the road from Verona to Augsburg. Today the Brenner Motorway (A13/A22) and the Brenner Railway carry enormous volumes of freight and passenger traffic between northern and southern Europe. Plans for a Brenner Base Tunnel running deep beneath the mountains are under construction and will further increase capacity when completed.
